VGA - Video Graphics Array

Also known as an RGB connector, VGA cables have been around for decades. It only supports video and only at lower resolutions.

DVI - Digital Visual Interface

This was the most common connector before HDMI and DisplayPort became widespread.  DVI only supports video and is typically for older systems, typically PC monitors.

Display Port

This connection provides high-definition video and audio.  It can support multiple screens from a single connection and supports high quality refresh rates delivering smoother motion and reduced lag.

The display port is not to be confused with HDMI, although they appear similar the display port is asymmetrical whereas the HDMI is not.

Mini-display Port

A smaller version of the DisplayPort connector used to transmit high-quality video and audio signals:

  • Compact Size – smaller than a standard DisplayPort, making it ideal for slim laptops and tablets.
  • High Resolution Support – can handle 4K and even 8K displays with the right adapter.
  • High Refresh Rates – supports 144Hz+, making it great for gaming and professional displays.
  • Audio & Video Transmission – unlike DVI, it can carry both video and audio signals.
  • Adaptability – can be converted to HDMI, DVI, or VGA using adapters.

DisplayPort over USB Type C

DisplayPort over USB Type-C (also called DP Alt Mode) is a feature that allows a USB-C port to transmit DisplayPort video and audio signals, enabling high-resolution external displays without needing a separate DisplayPort cable:

  • Single Cable Solution – USB-C can handle video, audio, data, and power at the same time.
  • High Resolution Support – Can output 4K, 8K, and even 10K video depending on the version. 
  • High Refresh Rates – Supports 144Hz, 240Hz, or higher, great for gaming and smooth visuals.
  • Power Delivery (PD) – Can charge laptops while sending video to an external monitor.
  • Adaptability – Can be converted to HDMI, DVI, or VGA using an adapter.

DisplayPort of USB Type C is used in laptops, tablets, smartphones, docking stations & monitors. To use DisplayPort over USB-C, your device, cable, and monitor must all support DP Alt Mode. Some USB-C cables are charging only and won't support video, so check compatibility!

HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface

One of the most common video connections HDMI is a one-cable solution for both audio and video connections. There are five HDMI options:

  • Type A (standard)
  • Type B (dual-link - not currently used in mainstream consumer products)
  • Type C (mini)
  • Type D (micro)
  • Type E (Automotive Connection System, designed primarily for use in vehicles)

USB-C

The USB-C cable has become the standard for most modern devices:

  • Reversible Design – No need to worry about plugging it in the wrong way.
  • Fast Data Transfer – Supports speeds up to 80 Gbps with Thunderbolt 5.
  • High Power Delivery – Can charge laptops, tablets, and smartphones with up to 240W.
  • Supports Video Output – Can carry 4K/8K video via DisplayPort or HDMI over USB-C.
  • Universal Compatibility – Works with laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and more.

USB adapter Type C male to USB A female

A small device that converts a USB-C connector into a standard USB-A plug, enabling compatibility between newer devices with USB-C ports and older computers, chargers, or peripherals that use USB-A.

USB male to HDMI female

USB to HDMI adapters allow you to connect your computer or device to an external display, such as a monitor or TV. There are different variations of USB to HDMI adapters, make sure to choose the right adapter based on USB type. Software (in this case drivers) needs to be installed for the adapter to work.
